The Toyota LandCruiser 60 Series is a genuine Australian icon. Built between 1980 and 1990, it carried the LandCruiser wagon into the modern era with a roomier body and, depending on year, the 2F and later 3F petrol sixes or the 2H and 12H-T turbo diesel engines under the bonnet.
These are old vehicles now, but they remain hugely popular for touring and restoration because the underlying platform is so tough. The best upgrades honour that character, improving airflow, clearance and reliability without spoiling the character and simplicity that make a 60 Series so worth keeping on the road.
A mandrel bent stainless steel exhaust is one of the most worthwhile changes for a 60 Series. The factory systems are highly restrictive, so a free flowing three inch system reduces backpressure, helps lower exhaust gas temperatures and frees up the older six to breathe more easily.
On the 12H-T turbo diesel in particular, a turbo back exhaust and supporting airflow upgrades make a real difference to how the engine pulls when loaded or climbing. A snorkel keeps cleaner, cooler air reaching the intake in dust and water, which is well worth having on a vehicle this age.
A well chosen suspension lift restores ride height on tired factory springs, improves clearance and gives back the control these heavy wagons need when loaded for a trip. Matching spring rates to your real world weight is the key to getting it right.
Rock sliders, underbody protection, recovery points, roof racks and long range tanks round out most 60 Series builds.
