PPD stocks performance exhausts for every common Patrol, from the GQ TB42/TD42 wagons through the Y61 GU diesels to the Y62 VK56 V8, and we design our own range alongside the systems we resell. We fit and install these at our Perth workshop on hoists, so the advice here comes from putting them on Patrols every week, not from a catalogue. If you want the full GU parts list rather than just exhausts, head to our all Nissan Patrol parts range and we'll point you to the right series collection.
This page covers why a performance exhaust matters on a Patrol, how the brands compare, and which system suits your exact engine and use case. Confirm the right part with us before you order if you're unsure of your series.
On the diesel Patrols (ZD30, TD42, TD42T), the main reason is exhaust gas temperature management. A factory exhaust restricts flow, and on a loaded GU towing or climbing, EGTs climb with it. A larger mandrel-bent system gets heat out faster, which helps keep EGTs in a safer band and improves throttle response off the bottom.
The trade-off is turbo-back versus cat-back. A turbo-back replaces everything from the turbo outlet and gives the biggest flow gain on a turbo-diesel like the ZD30 or TD42T. A cat-back leaves the front of the system factory and is the sensible path on the petrol Y62 VK56, where the goal is freeing the back half without disturbing emissions equipment. Any Patrol built after 2000 came factory with a catalytic converter and must keep a cat to stay road-legal.
Our own-brand Patrol exhausts are designed by us, not resold. The construction is fixed and verifiable:
The EGT port matters on a diesel Patrol. If you're managing temps on a heavily loaded ZD30, being able to fit a pyro probe straight into the system without drilling is the difference between guessing and knowing.
Our own-brand range covers selected GQ, GU and Y62 applications. We also stock King Brown's series-specific systems for GQ and GU, so you can choose a matched exhaust for those engines. If you want to confirm own-brand availability for your series, ask us before ordering.
We stock multiple brands because no single system suits every Patrol owner. Here's the honest breakdown.
| Brand | Series fit | Construction | EGT port | Fitting kit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PPD Performance | Patrol GQ, Y61 GU, Y62 (own brand) | 304 stainless, 1.5 mm wall, mandrel-bent, TIG-welded | Yes (1/8 NPT) | Complete: gaskets, bolts and clamps where required |
| King Brown | GQ TB42/TD42, Y61 GU, Y62 | Series-specific system, see note below | See note below | Supplied per system |
| Hulk 4X4 | Selected Patrol applications | See note below | See note below | Supplied per system |
King Brown and Hulk 4X4 construction, EGT port and fitting-kit details vary by system and are taken from product documentation; confirm the current spec for your application with us before ordering.
Choose King Brown if you want a Patrol-specific system for GQ, GU or Y62. Choose PPD Performance if you want our own 304 stainless build with the EGT port and complete fitting kit. Choose Hulk 4X4 where it's the listed fit for your application and the budget or specific configuration suits; confirm current Patrol stock with us first.
For the ZD30 diesel GU wagon, a 3-inch turbo-back is the system that does the most work, getting heat out and helping EGTs under load. We stock the King Brown GU performance system listed for 2000-2016 models and a later King Brown GU system listed as 2000-current, plus a 3-inch stainless upgrade for the GU 3L wagon. Both King Brown systems are Y61 GU fitments; if your GU was built after 2016, confirm fitment with us before ordering. For the full GU range beyond exhausts, see our Y61 GU Patrol parts range.
The GQ is well served. We stock the King Brown TBE42 GQ system (1987-1997) for the TB42 petrol, and the King Brown GQ system; confirm which suits your engine with us before ordering. Match the system to your engine, the TB42 and TD42 are not interchangeable. For the wider aftermarket parts list, see our GQ Patrol parts.
The Y62 is petrol, so a cat-back is the sensible road-legal path, keeping the factory CATs in place. We carry the King Brown Y62 system (2018+) and our own PPD 3-inch stainless cat-back for the Y62 V8 (2013-2019). See our Y62 Patrol upgrades for the broader build path.
An exhaust frees flow, but on the diesel Patrols the gains come together with a tune. A remap lets the engine make use of the improved flow and sets fuelling to suit. See our Patrol ECU remapping options. The Y61 and GQ Patrols are pre-DPF, so you can bolt the exhaust on and drive, no tune required for legality, though a remap, where available for your engine, unlocks the full benefit.
The GU (Y61) is the newer platform with coil-sprung suspension and more refined diesel options including the ZD30 and TD42T. The GQ is the earlier leaf/coil generation, simpler and prized for the TB42 petrol and TD42 diesel. For touring and towing the GU is generally the easier daily; the GQ wins fans for simplicity and the bulletproof TD42. We stock exhausts for both.
The GQ has a strong reputation, particularly the TD42 diesel, which is one of the most durable 4WD engines Nissan built. Reliability now comes down to age and maintenance history rather than the design. A free-flowing exhaust helps keep EGTs down on the diesel, which is kinder to a hard-worked engine.
If managing EGTs on a loaded or towing ZD30 is the priority, a 3-inch turbo-back is the system that helps most, because it clears heat from the turbo outlet back. If your GU is mostly unloaded daily driving, a smaller system is adequate. The turbo-back is the better choice for touring and towing duty.
PPD Performance exhausts are our own-brand range, using 304 stainless with a 1.5 mm wall, mandrel-bent and TIG-welded, with a 1/8 NPT EGT port and complete fitting kit. King Brown is a separate brand we stock that offers Patrol coverage across GQ, GU and Y62. Both brands cover GQ, GU and Y62 models; confirm the right system for your engine with us.
