    Y61 GU Patrol (1997-2016)

Nissan Patrol Y61 GU (1997-2016) Parts & Suspension

This is PPD's dedicated hub for the Nissan Patrol Y61 GU, covering wagon and cab-chassis builds from 1997 through 2016. We carry vehicle-specific suspension, springs, shocks, engine and driveline parts for the GU, and we fit them on hoists in our Perth workshop. The Y61 is a coil-sprung platform front and rear on the wagon, which is exactly why it takes well to a properly matched lift and load tune. Get the suspension right for how you actually use the truck, then build out from there with GU Patrol rock sliders & side steps and the rest.

Which Y61 GU Series Do You Have, and Why It Matters for Fitment

The Y61 ran across series 1 through 8, in wagon and cab-chassis bodies, with three main engines. Getting fitment right starts with knowing exactly which one you've got.

    • Body: The wagon runs coil springs front and rear. The cab-chassis runs coils up front and leaf springs at the rear, so rear suspension parts are not interchangeable between the two.
    • Engines: TD42 (4.2L six, naturally aspirated, with a factory-turbo TD42T offered in some markets, verify availability for your GU series) is the heavy, torquey diesel prized for longevity. ZD30 (3.0L common-rail and earlier direct-injection) is lighter over the front axle. TB48 is the 4.8L petrol six.
    • Front weight: A TD42 sits heavier on the front coils than a ZD30, which changes the front spring rate you want, especially once a bullbar or winch goes on.

If you're cross-shopping platforms, the older GQ Patrol (1989-1996) parts and the newer Y62 Patrol parts have their own pages. Tell us your series, body and engine and we'll confirm the right part.

What Suspension Suits a Y61 GU Patrol?

The GU is a coil platform, so suspension choice comes down to how you load and drive it. Three honest use cases:

    • Comfort touring (stock to light load): a 2 inch (indicatively around 40-50mm) lift on touring-rate coils and quality twin-tube or progressive shocks. Soaks up corrugations, keeps the unloaded ride civilised.
    • Heavy load / touring with weight (bar, winch, drawers, long-range tank): constant-load front coils matched to the front weight, plus rear springs rated to the gear you carry. Indicatively around 50mm front and 20-40mm rear once it's loaded to ride level. Confirm with PPD for your build.
    • Serious offroad: longer-travel lift, firmer valving for control over rocks and ruts, and shocks built to handle sustained heat.

The quickest way to compare those three setups:

Use Case Lift Height (indicative) Front Coil Rear Rate Who It Suits
Comfort touring ~40-50mm Touring rate Standard touring Mostly stock or empty wagon, sealed and light dirt touring
Heavy tourer ~50mm front, 20-40mm rear loaded Constant-load Load-rated to fitout Barred-up build with winch, drawers, fridge or long-range tank
Serious offroad Longer-travel lift Firmer valved Firmer valved Rock and rut work needing travel, control and sustained-heat shocks

Figures above are indicative, confirm the exact kit and heights with PPD for your series, body and load. The mistake we fix most often is a bar and winch dropping the nose on standard-rate front coils. If you're adding front weight, spec the heavier front coil to match it.

The Superior Engineering Range for the GU Patrol

Superior Engineering is the suspension line with the greatest range of options for the Y61 GU, and it covers the platform deeply, from coil lifts through to load-tuned kits. The range gives you:

    • Lift options commonly from 2 inch up, with coil rates sorted by engine and front load so a heavy TD42 with a steel bar isn't running the same coil as a lighter unloaded ZD30.
    • Load tuning via constant-load front coils and rear springs rated to your fitout, so the truck sits level and rides controlled when it's loaded for a trip rather than empty.
    • Matched shocks valved to the spring rate and intended use, instead of a generic shock bolted to a heavier spring.

Who each suits: standard-rate coils for a mostly stock tourer, constant-load front coils for a barred-up, winch-equipped build, and the heavier rear rates for cab-chassis and drawer/tank loads. We also stock PSR Suspension for the GU where it's the right fit. Tell us your build and we'll match the kit, then fit it in Perth.

Which Springs Should You Run on a GU Patrol?

Coil selection is about constant load, not just lift height. A few rules of thumb for the Y61:

    • Mostly empty wagon, light touring: standard touring-rate coils for the best unloaded ride.
    • Bullbar and winch: heavier front coils so the nose holds height under that front weight.
    • Drawers, fridge, long-range tank, regular towing: constant-load rear springs rated to the weight you carry day to day.

Signs your coils are tired: the truck sits lower than it used to, sags hard at the rear when loaded, bottoms out over speed humps, or has uneven guard-to-tyre gaps side to side. On a 20-plus-year-old GU, original coils have usually lost rate and are worth replacing as part of any suspension refresh.

Which Shocks Give the Smoothest Ride on a GU?

For the smoothest unloaded ride on a Y61 GU, you want a shock valved for touring rather than maximum control, paired with touring-rate coils. A firmer, load-focused shock gives better control with weight on board but rides harder when the truck is empty, so the right shock depends on how you mostly drive.

Signs your shocks are done: floaty or wallowing body movement, the front diving under brakes, the rear porpoising over undulations, clunks over bumps, or visible oil weeping down the shock body. On corrugations, worn shocks let the tyres skip and lose grip. Fresh shocks matched to your coils restore both ride and control. We fit and pressure-test on the hoist in Perth.

Engine & Driveline Parts for the GU Patrol

Beyond suspension, we carry engine and driveline gear for the TD42, ZD30 and TB48 Y61 GU. A free-flowing Nissan Patrol exhaust system helps the turbo-diesels breathe and run cooler, and on the common-rail ZD30 a Patrol ECU remapping setup sharpens throttle response and tidies up fuelling. We also stock interior and protection gear including Black Duck seat covers cut to fit specific GU wagon series, such as the Series 4-8 ST-S, ST-L and TI wagon covers. Confirm your series so we match the exact kit.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do GQ shocks fit a GU Patrol?

No, treat them as separate. The GQ (1989-1996) and Y61 GU (1997-2016) are different platforms with different mounts and lengths, so GQ shocks are not the correct fitment for a GU. Use GU-specific shocks matched to your coil rate. If you're shopping GQ gear, see our GQ Patrol (1989-1996) parts page.

What are the first signs of bad shocks on a GU?

The earliest signs are floaty body movement, the nose diving under braking, the rear bouncing or porpoising over undulations, and the tyres skipping on corrugations. You may also hear clunks over bumps or see oil weeping down the shock body. Any of these means it's time to inspect and likely replace.

What shocks give the smoothest ride on a GU Patrol?

A shock valved for touring rather than heavy load control, paired with touring-rate coils, gives the smoothest unloaded ride. If you carry weight regularly, a firmer load-focused shock controls that weight better but rides harder when empty. Match the shock to how you actually use the truck.

Do upgraded shocks make a difference?

Yes, noticeably. Worn factory shocks let the body wallow and the tyres skip on rough roads. Quality shocks matched to your coils restore control, keep the tyres planted on corrugations, and improve both ride comfort and safety, especially with any load on board.

    What's better, TD42 or ZD30?

The TD42 (4.2L) is the heavier, simpler, longevity-favoured diesel and sits more weight over the front axle, which affects front coil choice. The ZD30 (3.0L) is lighter and more modern, with the common-rail version smoother and more responsive once tuned. For suspension, the key point is the TD42's extra front weight, so spec your front coils to the engine and any bar/winch you run.
