This is the impartial N70 Hilux hub. We fit lift kits, suspension and accessories to the 2005-2015 KUN Hilux in our Perth workshop every week, on hoists, with qualified fitters, so the advice here comes from getting it right on real trucks. Across the page we compare the brands PPD actually stocks for the N70, Superior Engineering, PSR, CalOffroad, Bilstein and Tough Dog, and route you to the right setup by load, lift height and budget rather than pushing one brand. Chasing Toyota Hilux parts for a different generation? We stock other series too, so use the sibling links further down to jump to the correct hub for your truck. If you know your year and engine already, jump to the lift-kit section and confirm the part with us before you order.
N70 is Toyota's chassis designation for the seventh-generation Hilux sold in Australia from 2005 to 2015. You'll also see the KUN code, which refers specifically to the 3.0L 1KD-FTV turbo-diesel models (KUN26 in 4x4 form). The same generation ran two petrol options too, the 2.7L four-cylinder and the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6.
So when someone says "N70 Hilux" they mean the 2005-2015 truck, before the N80 (GUN) generation that arrived from mid-2015 with the 2.8L 1GD-FTV. Getting the series right matters because suspension and lift kits are chassis-specific, an N70 kit will not fit an N80. If your truck is a 2015-2019 model, head to our GUN (2015-2019) Hilux parts hub instead.
This page covers the full N70 parts catalogue, not just suspension. The categories we stock and fit for the 2005-2015 KUN include:
If you run a 3.0L diesel that sees dust and water, intake and exhaust upgrades usually come first, then suspension to carry the gear. Touring builds tend to lead with the lift kit and racks.
The N70 takes everything from a mild 2-inch lift to a serious 4-inch (100mm) kit. The right height depends on what you're doing with the truck, not what looks toughest in the carpark. Browse the full range of Hilux lift kits and match it to the guidance below.
Here's the honest cross-brand rundown for the N70, by load rating, ride character and lift range. This is the part the single-brand sites won't give you.
| Brand | Design | Ride character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superior Engineering | Monotube IFP & remote reservoir | Controlled, fade-resistant, firmer at full lift | 2-4 inch builds wanting heat control and high-lift options |
| PSR | Matched suspension packages | Balanced, set up for laden touring | Loaded tourers and work utes wanting a sorted package |
| CalOffroad | Foam cell & adjustable | Compliant, tunable to load | Tourers chasing comfort with load flexibility |
| Bilstein | Monotube gas | Firm, sporty, excellent on-road control | Mild-lift daily drivers prioritising road feel |
| Tough Dog | Foam cell & adjustable | Firmer, strong load capacity, value | Heavy GVM loads accepting a firmer unloaded ride |
Superior's Monotube IFP runs an internal floating piston that separates oil and gas, so it resists fade on long corrugated runs and suits the taller 4-inch builds, including the remote-reservoir version for the hardest work. For touring with a load, a PSR package or CalOffroad foam cell gives you compliance you can tune to weight. Bilstein monotubes shine on a mild-lift, mostly-road N70 where you want sharp control. Tough Dog foam cell is the firmer, more affordable, load-focused option. See the full CalOffroad suspension upgrades for Hilux if comfort-led touring is your priority.
The N70 Hilux was sold in Australia from 2005 to 2015. It's the seventh-generation Hilux, and the KUN code within that generation refers to the 3.0L 1KD-FTV turbo-diesel models. From mid-2015 the N80 (GUN) generation replaced it.
Different trucks for different buyers. The N70 (2005-2015) runs the proven 3.0L 1KD-FTV diesel and 2.7/4.0L petrols and is cheaper to buy and modify. The N80 (2015 on) has the newer 2.8L engine, better on-road manners and updated electronics. For a budget-friendly, easy-to-build tourer the N70 is hard to beat. Lift kits don't cross over between them.
There's no single best, it depends on use. For most N70 tourers a 2-inch kit clears 31-32inch tyres and rides well. For heavy GVM loads, a PSR or Tough Dog package handles constant weight. For serious offroad and 33s, a Superior Monotube IFP or remote-reservoir 4-inch kit is the pick. Tell us your load and driving and we'll match the kit.
Not generally. In most Australian states a modest lift within the allowed limit is fine, but rules vary by state and combine body and suspension lift totals. Larger lifts and bigger tyres often require engineering certification. Always check your state's requirements and get certification where needed, we can point you in the right direction.
It's tight. A 2-inch lift comfortably suits 31-32inch tyres on the N70; 33s usually need additional clearance work or a taller lift to avoid rubbing on lock and articulation. If 33s are the goal, a 3-4 inch kit is the cleaner path. Talk to us about your exact wheel and tyre combo first.
The N70 KUN spans 2005 to 2015 with diesel and petrol variants, and the correct lift kit, bullbar and accessories differ across them, so confirm the right part with us before you buy rather than guessing. Lift height affects tyre clearance, GVM and driveline angles, and anything beyond a mild lift typically needs sign-off from a qualified engineer for certification. We don't give legal guarantees, we get your fitment correct and refer you to the right engineer for certification.
If your truck is actually a 2015-2019 model, you want our GUN (2015-2019) Hilux parts hub instead. Send us your build plate details and intended load, and we'll spec the series-correct setup and fit it in our Perth workshop.
View ProductsThis page is the impartial N80 starting point. We fit suspension, lifts, body lifts and bullbars to N80 Hilux dual-cabs in our Perth workshop most weeks, across Superior Engineering, Tough Dog, PSR and CalOffroad. We stock all four, so the advice here isn't a sales pitch for one line, it's what actually suits your load, your ride priority and your budget. Tell us whether you're a tradie running a tray, a weekend tourer with a canopy, or someone chasing a comfortable daily, and the right kit falls out of that quickly.
There's no single best lift, there's the right lift for how you load the truck. For most N80 builds, around 2 inches (40-50mm) is the sensible number. On a bar, winch and canopy build, the part that matters most is matching the front coil rate to the weight you're adding, because a heavy alloy or steel bar pulls the nose down and a standard coil will sag and ride poorly.
Browse our N80 Hilux lift kits to see what we currently stock, and confirm the front coil rate with us against your bar and winch before you order.
All four brands lift an N80 around 2 inches. The difference is ride character, load focus and price. Here's the honest counter rundown.
| Brand | Strength | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Superior Engineering | Heavy-duty touring and load focus, broad component range | Serious touring builds carrying constant weight and wanting a complete matched setup |
| Tough Dog | Adjustable shock options, firmer load-capable ride, sharp value | Buyers who carry weight, tow, and accept a firmer unloaded ride for the load capacity |
| PSR | In-house engineered kits and frontal protection, integrated fitment | Builds pairing a PSR bar and suspension package for matched fitment |
| CalOffroad | Tuned comfort-touring valving with load options | Tourers prioritising on-road comfort who still want a capable touring spring |
Superior Engineering's strength on the N80 is heavy-duty, load-focused kits with a broad, matched component range, so for a constant-load touring build carrying a canopy and drawers at around a 2-inch lift, a complete Superior setup is an easy match. If comfort on the blacktop is your top priority, CalOffroad or a comfort-biased Superior spec is the call. If you run a full GVM load and tow, Tough Dog's firmer, load-capable setup earns its keep, and you accept a firmer ride empty. See our range of CalOffroad suspension upgrades for the Hilux for the comfort-touring end of the scale.
For an N80, 2 inches is the practical sweet spot. It clears 33-inch tyres on most setups, keeps the geometry close to factory, and is the easiest to keep legal. A 3-inch lift starts pulling driveline and steering angles further from standard and usually needs additional correction components. In Australia, lift limits are set by state regulations and a combination of suspension and tyre increase over a certain total height needs engineering certification. We won't give you a blanket "it's legal" ruling, check your state's rules and get an engineer's sign-off where required.
The N80 runs coil-over-strut front suspension and a leaf-sprung live rear axle, which is why a loaded tray rides firm and an empty tub can feel busy. Ride quality comes from two things: spring rate matched to your actual load, and shocks valved for how you drive. Too-stiff a spring with no weight on it rides harsh; too-soft a spring under a loaded canopy sags and bottoms out. Get the spring right for your real-world weight first, then choose a shock, comfort-biased for touring, firmer and adjustable for load and towing. Our Hilux suspension and lift kits cover both the comfort and load ends.
An N80 Hilux body lift raises the cab and tub off the chassis using spacer blocks, typically around an inch, without touching the suspension. It buys you body-to-tyre clearance for larger tyres and a slightly taller stance, but it does not increase ground clearance under the diffs or improve articulation, because the axles and chassis stay where they are. That's the key difference from a suspension lift, which raises the whole vehicle and changes how it rides and flexes.
Across Hilux generations, a Hilux body lift follows the same principle, lifting the body on spacers rather than the suspension, so the general Hilux body lift logic applies whether you run an older model or the N80. On the N80 specifically, a body lift is most useful as a clearance trick to fit bigger rubber when you don't want to push the suspension lift higher and trigger more driveline correction. The N80's spacer kits and fitment notes are model-specific. Done properly, a body lift needs extended bumper and accessory brackets so panel gaps and the bar line stay right. Body-lift height also factors into total lift for legality, so include it when you work out whether you need certification.
Short version: if you want clearance for tyres, a body lift helps cheaply. If you want a better ride, more underbody clearance and articulation, that's a suspension lift. Many N80 builds run a modest suspension lift and skip the body lift entirely.
Frontal protection is the other half of most N80 builds, and getting the right bar for your exact model year matters because the N80 changed across its run. PSR's Ambush range covers the generation in distinct fitments: the Ambush Low Single Hoop for the 2015-2020 MK1-MK2, the Ambush Hoopless bar for the 2015-2022 MK1-MK2, and the Ambush Single Hoop for the 2020-2023 MK3 (5/2020-on). The MK1-MK2 and MK3 bars are not interchangeable, so confirm your build date with us.
If you're an earlier N70 owner shopping frontal protection, you land here too, but be clear the PSR Ambush bars above are N80 fitments, not N70. N70 needs its own bar, so check the right part with us before ordering. A steel bar adds front weight, which is exactly why we keep coming back to matching your front coil rate to the bar and winch. Pair a bar with rock sliders and side steps for underbody protection, and see the full Hilux bullbars and frontal protection range.
A 2-inch suspension lift is generally within limits in most states, but rules vary by state and total lift (suspension plus tyre plus body lift) is what counts. Above a set combined height, engineering certification is required. Check your state's modification regulations and get an engineer to sign off where needed.
Yes, most N80 Hilux builds run 33-inch tyres on a 2-inch lift, often with minor guard or liner trimming depending on wheel offset. Confirm your wheel and tyre combination with us, because offset changes how much clearance you actually have at full lock and full compression.
A body lift is a cheap way to gain tyre clearance, but it doesn't raise underbody or diff clearance or improve articulation, since the chassis and axles don't move. It's a good idea if your only goal is fitting bigger tyres. If you want a better ride and more capability off-road, a suspension lift is the better spend.
The most discussed N80 issues are DPF regeneration on the 2.8L diesel in short-trip use, and the factory rear leaf setup riding firm empty but sagging under a loaded tray or canopy. The sag is the suspension one we fix most, with constant-load rear springs rated to your actual load.
Cost depends on the brand, whether you go basic spring-and-shock or a matched constant-load kit, and fitting. A straightforward 2-inch kit sits at the lower end, while a load-rated touring setup with quality adjustable shocks costs more. Send us your build and load and we'll quote the right kit fitted in our Perth workshop.
